Proper drainage is vital to the integrity of your foundation, as well as, promoting a healthy turf and landscape. However, having improper drainage can create expensive foundation issues, ground erosion, plant disease, wood rot and mold and/or mildew. In addition, standing water provides the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.
So, how can you identify if you have a drainage issue? There are various signs that point to a potential issue, the most common being - standing water around sidewalks, driveways, flower beds and foundations after watering or a rainfall; foundation damage, such as cracks in subsurface areas, around windows and door frames, and in the foundation itself; erosion in the gradient of your property.
Another option for drainage correction is a surface drain. Surface drainage systems are typically composed of a series of underground pipes which carry away water that is collected through catch basins. Water can then be drained to another part of the property, to the street, or into a basin for use in garden and lawn watering. Surface drainage systems are often used in conjunction with other drainage correction strategies. This may include drainage grates that are integrated with your property’s driveway or walkway or with sub-surface drainage systems like French drains.
